Round 1

I am blue, and I put my troops in Madrid, not sure why. But something is sure, Madrid bordered 4 cities so that’s a pretty good reason for why I put my troops in Madrid. (I’m not from Spain.)

Round 2

I can’t choose where to put my troops, so I decided to put my 3 troops at the start more than 3 steps from H&D (hub and danger). A wise decision, huh? And I did the pacifist choice, which is not attacking anyone in 1 round. But maybe someone could attack me. I better warn myself that.

Round 3

Trip to Russia for 6.... anyone? Well I got it. Not the real trip, but 6 troops in Russia is mine “at the moment”. Still, anyone go to Novosibirsk or Yakutsk around this month? Pretty cold there, and also remote. 13 in Madrid, don’t know why they put it Madrid not Barcelona, and yes, this is disturbing.

Round 4

Unplayed.

Round 5

OK guys, there’s a good news and a bad news. The bad news is, I missed a round. Well the good news is, because I missed a round, I have 6 troops! (3+3=6, I think you could do the math yourself, please.)

Again, some Infernal Affairs (American: The Departed) tried to attack me from my troop in Novosibirsk from about 3000 miles away (4000 miles for who uses metric just like me and other 190~200 countries as a basis unless you’re from Liberia, Myanmar or USA.) How to pronounce that city? Eye-dee-kay. Well I was originally going to put it in London, but then I realized I had a deferred troop, so I changed my mind and again and again and again and again and again and again.

Round 6

New round, new risk. I decided to attack Magadan which is pretty a dumb choice. I should prepare to defense other players’ troops. Well Beijing (currently conquered by Jamie) probably could attack me, but his round has ended. So if I could get earlier than him, I maybe could attack him. But, no.

Round 7 & 8

Sorry, I was too late to type Round 7, so I put it with Round 8 together.

OK, my goal in this game is to conquer the whole Eurasia to get enough bonuses I need. Since there are 19 cities in Eurasia, seems like I had to do it one at a time!

Round 9

Whoa! Magadan Attack! Double Threat Warning! This is what I call a double-trouble-bubble.

Well I only had 6 regions, unlike other people. But notably, 3 got 9 at the same time! That’s memorable for sure.

Round 10

Another round, another danger. I am still far away from the goal of the Eurasia “conquership”. You’ll be surprised, unless you’re the Mongols. That empire was pretty big though. Overall, Jamie is going to attack me from Moscow, then I used my reinforcement. First time in this game, not in this club though. But, still, pretty impressing.

Round 11

I’m taking over half of the Europe! Not sure why the Moscow attack works, it shouldn’t though. By the way, Istanbul is an European city? I thought Istanbul is both European and Asian! It should have a bi-color text!

I’m taking over half of the Europe! Not sure why the Moscow attack works, it shouldn’t though. By the way, Istanbul is an European city? I thought Istanbul is both European and Asian! It should have a bi-color text!

Round 12

Jamie was eliminated, that’s ironic! Because I remember days ago, he still had like 12 regions! Hmm.... bad luck for him. Whoa! 1 city left to conquer the whole Europe, hope there’s not even one CCCCCCCCCOMBO BREAKER! to break my combo.

Round 13

Unplayed.

Round 14 & 15

Europe conquered! I hope this round won’t be a CCCOMBO BREAKER! round. Hope no one breaks my combo. 8 troops, can you believe it? That’s like Kim Kardashian putting her head in a blender! That’s a bad metaphor, I know.

Round 16

Le five extra troops has finally arrived! (Rage comics reference). Now, next goal, conquer the whole world. Mwahahahaha, Ok, not the evil scientist laugh. Yakutsk (currently remoted) kinda lonely though. Well I have some thing up

my sleeves and you’ll never know what it is. What is it? A box of chocolate!

Round 17

That cr1961 guy’s pretty impressing, from 6 to 20 regions in one night, what a call! Well at least he doesn’t affect on me, that’s what I call revenge! Damn keyboard, why does every time I wanted to type the letter !, it turned to @? Le dawn of a combo breaker broke my combo on Reykjavik, only 1 round of sweet 8 troops, what a hoe!

Round 18 & 19

Time to invade other continents! Better watch out for cr1961! Although I still don’t notice his large regions and troops. Well, it’ll eventually come after me. So I better pack up those 8 troops and ready to conquer! That’s why this club’s called Conquer Club!

Round 20, 21, 22 & 23

A four-part season finale! Actually, 3 though, I missed one of them. cr1961 conquered the whole map! I am the runner-up, but I missed 9 points during the game. What a jerk! #amateurofalltrades-bookmarksatoz, call me!

SPACE ODYSSEY

by Kathy George on February 27, 2012
Puzzle time: 11:40
Score: 100%
Difficulty: 3 / 10
Quality: 7 / 10

Theme: SPACE ODYSSEY - Theme entries included astronomical objects.
Theme entries:

  • 17A: Revenuer’s quarry (MOONSHINER)
  • 37A: Like an unflipped egg (SUNNY SIDE UP)
  • 60A: Overly romantic (STARRY-EYED)
Word of the Puzzle: ANTIPASTO (34D: Restaurant order)
Antipasto (plural antipasti), means "before the meal" and is the traditional first course of a formal Italian meal. Traditional antipasto includes cured meats, olives, roasted garlic, peperoncini, mushrooms, anchovies, artichoke hearts, various cheeses (such as provolone or mozzarella). The antipasto is usually topped off with olive oil.
Many compare antipasto to hors d'oeuvre, but antipasto is served at the table and signifies the official beginning of the Italian meal. It may also be referred to as a starter, or an entrée.

The last time I have played a crossword is... 3 days ago, that is one long ass time. (Not cussing, but a historical time scale unit.)

1 day left from expiration date of the puzzle so let’s get started.

I love 2001: Space Odyssey, that’s like the best sci-fi film ever made! But we’re not talking about this. The “Moon-Starer” and “Star-Child” didn’t appear, so I guess it’s not associated with the movie, the score or the novel. Finally, a theme answer that I has filled in correctly without any other letters been revealed! Which is SUNNY-SIDE UP, those eggs were delicious! ‘til I’m 11, too salty. Maybe I should try some other kind of eggs.

I would like to eat some ANTIPASTO, but no, fat chance. It’s never going to happen, considered that I will never step into an Italian restaurant again. Should I tell you the story? No, I shouldn’t, it’s too gross. Other clues are pretty elementary, but how on earth did I figure out HERBAGE for 30 seconds? Well obviously because that clue is the last one! MAPLE and BALSA, two kind of woods. Well I got it another way around. I got TRICEPS because I have gone on a science after-school class, and yes, I still know what they do until this MOMENT (1D: Brief period of time).

Bullets:

  • 5A: Garnish unit (SPRIG) DKHTW = Don’t know how this works.
  • 36A: 7-Up alternative (COLA) How about some Dr. Pepper?
  • 45A: Clues (HINTS) Does it include this one?
  • 65A: Silver State tourist destination (RENO) Anyone go to Reno on a vacation? If yes, leave it in the comments below.
  • 61D: About 907 kilos (TON) I just love the metric system.

PAY UP

by Paul Jenn on February 26, 2012
Puzzle time: 13:54
Score: 100%
Difficulty: 4 / 10
Quality: 6 / 10

Theme: PAY UP - The theme answers include words that are a type of paying.
Theme entries:

  • 17A: They may be next to correct answers (CHECK MARKS)
  • 39A: Bad rap (TRUMPED UP CHARGE)
  • 64A: Obviously ready to make a purchase (CASH IN HAND)

Word of the Puzzle: ANATHEMA (10D: Greatly detested thing)
Anathema (from Koine Greek ἀνάθεμα[1] "something dedicated, especially dedicated to evil” from ἀνατίθημι anatithÄ“mi, "I set upon, offer as a votive gift") originally meant something lifted up as an offering to the gods; it later evolved to mean:
  1. to be formally set apart;
  2. banished, exiled, excommunicated;
  3. denounced, sometimes accursed

In the Bible, it appears in conjunction with the word "maranatha".

It’s a long day without crosswords, huh? I have work to do today, so let’s get started right now!

Pay up, this let me remember the “Seatbelt buckling” rule. That part of my memory is pretty unpleasant to me until now. Ok it is pretty obvious that 17A should be CHECK MARKS. What I fill? CHECK POINT. I think slangs are more common in crosswords than in daily life, you wouldn’t use...... uh..... I can’t think of one right now, maybe later.

The word of the puzzle is originally JAFFA (1A: Port of Israel), but ANATHEMA won by 1 million results. That’s small for results on Google. And yes that is not number. I would call this puzzle a little bit slangy, but also contains some mind-blowing clues. Such as 31A: Jigsaw puzzle parts, I inserted IMAGES but that doesn’t work, how easy is that, huh?

The MACARONI MASSACRE always makes me laugh. It’s like every part of the spaghetti family doesn’t accept the macaroni and they started a holocaust. Well, at least that hasn’t happened before. Or has it?

Bullets:
  • 20A: It may whistle in the kitchen (KETTLE) Even though I got it right in th e first time, I was still surprised. Because most of the clues were pure guessing (and most of them were wrong)
  • 55A: Feeding tubes? (MACARONI) This picture is disgusting.

  • 67A: 1,000 grams (KILO) I’m still wondering why most of the people in the US use the customary system, not the metric. Co’mon, there’s only like 3 countries that doesn’t use metric. Liberia, Myanmar and … United States?
  • 12D: Ancient Roman greeting (AVES) Aves is also a bird class, actually all of the birds are in the class of Aves, if you’ve been in high school biology classes.
  • 32D: High-altitude clouds (CIRRI) Talkin’ about Cirri, how ‘bout its cousin - Siri? Speakin’ of Siri, does anyone use Siri to solve crossword puzzle?
